I embarked on my international lecturing career in 2009, debuting at the prestigious International Oral Design Symposium in New York.
Since then, I have had the privilege of presenting to some of the most esteemed societies in dentistry, including the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA), the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the European Society of Cosmetic Dentistry (ESCD), the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD), and the Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontists (AANZP), as well as the Dutch Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, among countless other international symposiums and conferences.
My lectures focus on the application of the eLAB system, instrumental shade measurement, dental color science, color perception in dentistry, and the optical properties of dental hard tissues and materials.
Beyond my commercial engagements, I am dedicated to education and regularly offer pro-bono lectures to both undergraduate and graduate students, with affiliations at Freiburg University, Goethe University Frankfurt, the Eastman Dental Institute in London, and Strasbourg University.
My lecturing style is known for being both engaging and humorous (even for a German), and I strive to fuse scientific knowledge with practical insights, drawing from my extensive background as a master dental technician.
In this 45-minute lecture, I will introduce the principles of dental colorimetry, addressing common misconceptions and explaining the fundamental aspects of vision science. We'll explore the basics of colorimetric computing, including how light information is converted into a color space, and clarify key colorimetric terms such as hue, chroma, intensity, saturation, colorfulness, lightness, and brightness. The session will also provide an overview of various color measurement devices, discussing their pros and cons, as well as essential concepts like illumination geometry. This lecture is designed to equip attendees with a solid foundation in instrumental color measurement for practical application in dentistry.
In this 45-minute lecture, we will delve into the common misperceptions in dental colorimetry, exploring the critical differences between perceived and measured color differences. We’ll clarify concepts of accuracy and precision as they are understood in color science and discuss the importance of inter-device agreement. The lecture will introduce the fundamentals of psychophysics, including the use of visual scaling techniques to evaluate device performance. Additionally, we’ll uncover some surprising facts about color perception in dentists, highlighting the biases that can influence clinical decisions. This session is designed to deepen your understanding of the complexities of color assessment in dentistry.
In this 60-90 minute lecture, depending on requirements, we will explore a groundbreaking approach to shade matching in dentistry, moving beyond traditional shade guides. We will begin by distinguishing between shade selection and shade matching, followed by a brief historical overview of color order systems like the Munsell Notation and the origins of shade guides. The lecture will delve into perceptual phenomena, introduce the CIELAB color space, and explain visual thresholds essential for accurate color matching. We’ll examine the gamut of natural tooth colors and the limitations of shade guides, along with an introduction to the optical physics of dental materials and the origins of conditional metamerism. This session is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of modern shade matching techniques grounded in scientific principles.
In this 45-minute semester lecture, designed for university students and educational institutions, we will explore essential techniques for visual shade selection and the role of dental photography in documentation. The lecture will also address common limitations and obstacles encountered in shade matching. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of color science and receive a basic introduction to instrumental shade measurement, equipping them with the foundational knowledge necessary for accurate color assessment in dentistry. This session aims to bridge the gap between theory and practical application in the field of dental color science.
In this 45-minute lecture, we'll cover the essential principles of dental photography, helping you understand how to maximize the potential of your equipment. You'll learn the fundamentals of aperture and shutter speed, the importance of strobe flash illumination, and how to effectively use bouncers and diffusers. The session will also explore both qualitative and quantitative approaches to dental photography, the proper use of a grey reference card, and the concept of focus distance. This lecture is designed to enhance your technical skills and improve the quality of your dental photography.
This 45-minute lecture delves into the refined art of creating platinum foil veneers, a technique that has seen a resurgence among dental artisans despite the dominance of modern CAD/CAM technologies. We will explore the history and evolution of platinum foil veneer fabrication, from its origins in the late 19th century to its current applications. Attendees will gain insight into the key advantages of this method, including superior marginal fit, minimal thermal expansion issues, and the ability to create highly aesthetic restorations without relying on advanced technology. The lecture will cover the entire process, from the initial adaptation of the platinum foil to the final veneering and finishing, emphasizing the importance of precision and craftsmanship in achieving exceptional results.
